We did it! Thanks to your support, we had a victory on Election Day. Because of the support I received from hundreds of volunteers and donors, I was elected as the only Democrat from eastern Oregon in the Legislature. It’s quite an honor to represent the people of Bend and to be a strong voice for this side of the state.
I’ve been getting a quick briefing on the ins and outs of the House this past week so that I’ll be ready to go when the session starts in January. Before then, I’ll want to meet with constituents to listen to your concerns and better understand the issues that are important to you. I’ll keep this web site active so that you can keep informed. Expect to hear from me, and I hope to keep hearing from you as I get ready to go to Salem.
Thanks again to all the people who supported me throughout my campaign. It’s because of you we have this victory.

Last night my campaign took a little time to say thank you to all the volunteers who have helped propel the campaign forward. Holly and Norm Remer hosted a bar-be-que for us on the banks of Mirror Pond. It was a lovely setting for a fun evening.
We served hamburgers (ground Chuck, of course!), and joked about lighting the BBQ with my pants. We laughed about the playground taunts my opponent are tossing at me and how my campaign was hitting them out of the park. It was a fun reprive from the hectic pace of the last few days.
Most importantly, we shared some wonderful energy as we head toward the finish line. There is still a lot of work to do, and plenty of opportunities to make a difference in this race. Every phone call, every conversation with a voter, brings us one step closer to victory on Election Night. I hope to see you at the Bus Project Get-Out-The-Vote canvass on Nov. 2 or in the campaign office for a strong finish on Election Day.

Apparently the Republicans are getting desperate. The more my campaign talks about Chuck Burley’s abysmal voting record, the more they try to distract voters with wild distortions and negative ads. Don’t be distracted.
Chuck Burley missed 290 votes in the 2007 legislative session. It’s on the record. He missed votes to improve schools, help cancer patients and protect kids from abuse and neglect. And, when he was there, he cast the deciding vote against giving 116,000 kids access to basic health care. These aren’t distortions, they’re facts.
I’m going to keep telling voters they deserve to be represented by someone who has always been there for Bend, someone who takes every vote seriously and will do the job they elect me to do. And, if Chuck Burley and the Republicans in Salem don’t like that, too bad!

The ballots have been mailed and some people have already voted. Here at headquarters we’re still calling voters, seeking support for my campaign. Volunteers are asking Democrats to vote for me, and Mike and I are calling people who haven’t yet made up their minds - Republicans included! - to let them know my stand on the issues. We don’t want to miss a single opportunity to talk with the voters of District 54.
Volunteers taking time from their busy lives to help me get elected are very inspiring to me. Their hard work keeps me going when it seems like the phone calls will never end. It will take me a lifetime to say thank you to everyone but here’s a start: THANK YOU!!!

The voter’s pamphlets are out and ballots will soon be in the mail. When I started my campaign in December, it felt like this time would never come. Now, Election Day is just around the corner.
Unlike my opponent, I believe every vote counts, so I’m working hard to make contact with as many voters as I can before Election Day. If you had any thoughts about helping with my campaign, now is the time. Just a few hours calling voters on the phone, or knocking on doors will make a huge difference to the final outcome of this very close contest.
Call the campaign office at 693-8620 or visit our volunteer page. You can sign up to volunteer with just a few keystrokes.
Other things to do before Election Day are:
Write a letter to the editor. Click here for ideas and submission information.
Pick-up a lawn sign at the Deschutes Democrats campaign office, 709 NW Wall St.
Get a postcard packet so that you can tell people you know why you’re supporting Judy. Jot a short note about why you’re on Team Judy and mail the postcard to a friend. A personal endorsement from you will mean a great deal. Call the campaign office at 693-8620 to get a packet.

This Saturday Governor Barbara Roberts will host a luncheon for me at Black Bear Dinner. I am so proud to have the first (and so far the only) woman governor of Oregon come to Bend to support me. Gov. Roberts was one of the trailblazers for women in this state, inside and outside politics.
She remains a vital, and refreshing part of Oregon’s political scene and I hope you can join us Oct. 11 for some great food and an even better discussion about Oregon politics. Please call the campaign office at 693-8620 or e-mail us at judyfor54@bendbroadband.com to let us know you’re coming.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my television ad. We tried to sum up the serious issues I’ve tackled in my career but do it in a way that would stand out from the usual political ads. If you haven’t had a chance to see it, you can find it on youtube.
I’ll be doing more ads like this one, a little lighthearted and full of personality. However, I will also be challenging my opponent on his record in the legislature. Missing 290 votes isn’t a laughing matter and I want to make sure that voters know Chuck wasn’t taking care of our business during the 2007 session.
I’ll be shining a spotlight on important votes he missed that could have improved schools, helped cancer patients and protected kids from abuse and neglect. He also cast the deciding vote against a plan to give 116,000 Oregon kids access to health insurance. The Republicans will push back because I’m going to keep up the pressure in order to give voters a full view of Chuck’s lackluster performance.
This will be a tough race right up to the finish but it will be worth it to provide the full representation District 54 deserves.

My opponent recently attempted to justify missing 290 votes during the 2007 legislative session by saying that most of them were excused absences. It’s important that you know what an excused absence is in the Oregon Legislature. A representative can have an absence - for any reason - marked as excused if he simply calls in ahead of time.
There are no list of what counts as an excused absence, no one double checks to see if the absent legislator is really where he claims to be. The legislator is treated like an adult, expected to do his job to the best of his abilities. Ultimately, he’s held accountable by the voters. They decide if he’s been doing the job he was elected to do, or if he was too busy taking care of other business to represent them well in Salem.
That’s what I’m trying to do by pointing out my opponent’s attendance record and missed votes. I don’t think missing 1 in 5 votes is how the job of your representative should be done. I believe that every vote counts because it puts into the record my position on issues - a record that is available for everyone to see. We may not always agree on a position, but at least you’ll know what my vote was and where I stand. You won’t have to guess because when it truly counts, I will be there to cast my vote.
And you should too. When it truly counts, you should cast your vote November 4. I hope it will be a vote for me, but either way it’s a vote too important to be missed.

The campaign is moving at full speed and you will soon be seeing my messages in mailings and advertising. There are lots of people in the community who have moved here within the past five years or so, or who recently chose to register to vote at Democrats. In fact, our district has an Democratic edge for the first time in many years.
Our research shows that once people learn about me and my positions on the issues, they will vote for me. That’s why a strong outreach effort is so important at this time in the campaign. All my efforts are going toward meeting voters and raising money for this major push. It’s very challenging, but I’m excited about getting my message out.
We have the opportunity to make my fundraising effort even more successful. I am in the middle of a “match challenge.” For every dollar I raise from individual donors like you, I will receive matching dollars from a state-wide organization.
At this point in the race, every dollar counts. My local donors have already been incredible, but this is an opportunity to really leverage your support for me into even more funds, which means I can be more successful at getting out my message. You can easily donate on-line through ACT BLUE by clicking here. Or, you can visit my donations page to make a pledge.
With your continued support we can win this race on Election Day!

We had a real labor day in the Dugan-Stiegler family this weekend when my son Dan and his wife Ashley had their first child, a beautiful baby girl named Aurora Grace Dugan. She was born on August 31 at 8:48 p.m. and was almost a Labor Day baby.
Seeing the photos of our first granddaughter brought home to me the main reason why I chose to run this race. It’s about the little guys – the children who deserve the best world we can give them.
I want to make sure that public education helps children reach their goals the way it did for me. I want to see good paying jobs in our community, like those in the developing market of renewable energy, so that young people can stay in their home town when they’re ready to raise their own families. I want safe communities so that children are protected from those who would abuse them. None of these things come easy. It takes a union of hard work and community spirit to accomplish these objectives.
We just celebrated Labor Day, when the entire country recognizes the contributions of working people. I take heart because these are the very people who have offered me their support. They want to attain the same things I hope to bring about as your representative, and with lots of “labor,” we’ll prevail on Election Day.
